OPEN HOUSE LONDON, Sunday 22 September 2019. If you'd like to know more about the fascinating history of Canons Park, please join us for our guided tours of the park, led by members of the Friends committee. Tours take around half an hour and run throughout the day, every hour on the hour, from 10am to 4pm (last tour). Our 2pm tour will be led by historian Dr Aaron Graham, who has made an extensive study of the life of the Duke of Chandos. This is a more academic tour and is suitable for ages 14+. All tours start opposite the Good Friends Cafe at the heart of the park. Please arrive 5 minutes before the tour starts. To complete your day out, why not visit St Lawrence Church in Whitchurch Lane, just at the edge of the park? This 18th century gem was often frequented by the Duke of Chandos and his family and features stunning wall paintings as well as the Duke's mausoleum. Free guided tours will run from 1pm to 4pm on the day and 2pm to 4pm on other Sundays during the year.... not to be missed!
CANONS PARK GARDENING CLUB Our lovely George V Memorial Garden is in need of some TLC!! Now that we have no park keeper, the council is only going to be cutting the grass during the year and tidying up the garden as and when it can. We desperately need keen gardeners - with or without experience - to help us return this little oasis of calm at the centre of the park to its former glory. GARDENING CLUB SESSIONS are generally held every third Sunday from 10am to 1pm but you can stay as little or as long as you like! Why not join us? All tools and equipment, including gardening gloves, will be provided or you can bring your own if working alone. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact our gardening volunteer coordinator, Conchi Vera at: firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Forthcoming session dates: 9 June, 30 June, 21 July, 11 August, 1 September, 22 September, 13 October and 3 November (weather permitting).
BIRD WATCHING WALKS The park is teeming with wildlife, especially birds! There are many varieties to watch out for and everyone is welcome to join the group, whatever their age or experience. Walks take place from 10am to 12pm on the first Sunday of every month except January (walk is on the second Sunday) and in July, August and September when the walks do not take place as the trees are too leafy. Meet at the Donnefield Avenue gates to Canons Park. All welcome! Bring binoculars if you have them and we suggest you wear comfortable shoes. Stay as long as you like and feel free to join the group if you spot them walking through the park. NOW ON SUMMER BREAK - July, August and September. Next walks are on: 6 October, 3 November, 1 December.
